Synergetic design enhances workplace connectivity for Clayton Utz Melbourne office

Expertise, News, Projects

Innovative construction methods and a collaborative partnership approach has resulted in the delivery of the 7,000m2 ultra-modern office space for top tier legal firm, Clayton Utz at 333 Collins Street, Melbourne.

The three level refurbishment and fit-out was designed to reconnect levels 17, 18 and 19 of the heritage listed Collins Street tower and as a result required careful management to minimise disruption to other tenancies operating throughout the building.

The project has been transformational for Clayton Utz, turning their traditional floorplan of office silos into a flexible working environment that embraces open-plan workplace design. International design practice Hassell adopted leading edge, design popular among law firms, incorporating café style break-out areas on each level and an interconnecting staircase to provide more spaces for teams to interact and collaborate.

The client design and delivery team of Clayton Utz, Buildcorp, Hassell, Medland and WT Partnership, worked in a collaborative partnership to ensure the entire project was designed and delivered for optimum quality and buildability, safety, and workforce continuity outcomes. The construction journey from concept to completion included early engagement, allowing Buildcorp early input to identify the optimum way to build and deliver the project in a fast-tracked pre-construction and procurement phase.

The program of works was completed in three stages across 40 weeks, including the first stage and construction of open plan work stations and offices on level 17 and half of 18. Stage two involved works to create a new interconnecting staircase between the floors. To mitigate disruptions to the business during that process, Buildcorp introduced innovative solutions including stair installation hoarding, bespoke acoustic panelling and noise minimising processes.

Buildcorp’s internally developed quality management app, Onsite, kept the project on track, effectively managing the quality assurance and delivery of the project. This allowed the team to proactively manage potential defects during the course of construction so the handover to Clayton Utz and building management was a more seamless transition into their office space and new way of working.
