December 2016: Safety is always Buildcorp’s number one priority and to reinforce this during this festive season, our teams have also been reflecting on the transformation of our safety systems over the last three years.

Sadly, 2016 was another year that saw many fatalities and injuries on construction sites across Australia. Safety risks are even higher during the lead-up to the Christmas shut-down, where there is typically an industry-wide increase in construction deaths and injuries.

With this reality front-of-mind, Buildcorp has been thinking differently about our approach to safety in recent years. We have used the power of continual learning to reimagine our safety and risk management systems. These new systems are based on effective communication of real time safety data, regular analysis to spot trends and risks, simpler processes and a commitment from our teams to make the necessary changes to better manage risks.

Thanks to our teams’ successful implementation of the new systems, we have achieved a record 56% three year decrease in the key industry safety measurement ‘Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR)’. We have also been recognised by the Master Builders Association with a 2016 award for ‘Site safety – Innovative Safety System.’  (See our milestones along the journey to this award in the diagram below)

I am immensely proud of these achievements, specifically because the new systems use an innovative, collaborative and transparent approach to continual learning. Our teams look beyond the industry-accepted LTIFR metric and take the time to better understand the real cause-and-effect relationships the safety audit data is telling us about our high risk work management.

I would like to state my most heartfelt thanks to Buildcorp’s people and teams who embraced these new systems and helped to make our sites safer and healthier places to work every day. These results would not have been possible without your commitment and together we have achieved something to be very proud of.

But there’s always more to do. Buildcorp’s expertise in niche, complex and challenging, high quality projects means our teams will always need to apply a safety management lens to navigate daily risks. With the support of our continually improving systems and ongoing commitment from our people, we will work hard to ensure that our mission ‘everyone on every site, goes home safe, everyday’ is something we continue to live up to.

I wish you and your families a safe and happy festive season and New Year period.
